Market rates of rapeseed-mustard remained below the MSP till 2020-21 RMS
The Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) has stated that average market prices of rapeseed-mustard in India have remained over 28% higher than the minimum support price (MSP) during the current season — 2022-23 rabi marketing season (RMS). In its ‘Price Policy for Rabi Crops: The Marketing Season 2023-24’, CACP has mentioned that for the 2022-23 RMS, the average market price is reported at Rs 6,548 per quintal as compared with the MSP of Rs 5,050 per quintal, about 28.4% higher.
The commission stated that the average market prices of rapeseed-mustard remained below the MSP till 2020-21 RMS. However, in the subsequent period, market prices reported to be higher. The gap between market price and MSP reduced to -9.2% during 2020-21RMS, as the market prices significantly increased in this period.
In the 2021-22 RMS, the average market prices surged to a record high at Rs 6,483 per quintal as compared with the MSP (Rs 4650 per quintal), which is about 28.2% higher than the support price.
During the 2022-23 RMS, the market prices of rapeseed-mustard in all the reported states remained above the MSP except on March 18, 2022 when its rates crashed in Uttar Pradesh. The average difference between the market price and MSP for the 2022-23 RMS was about 27.9% in Rajasthan and Haryana, where as it was 24.9% and 25.7% in Madhya Pradesh and UP respectively.
