There is no procurement of lentil during the same period
The procurement of chana (gram) by the government agencies in India has jumped over four times in the 2022-23 rabi marketing season (RMS). The Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) has stated that as per the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (Nafed) data, during 2022-23, a total of 25.54 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of gram has been procured till June 30, 2022 as against 6.31 LMT in 2021-22 RMS.
In its ‘Price Policy for Rabi Crops: The Marketing Season 2023-24’, CACP has mentioned that procurement of gram in 2021-22 RMS was 5.7% of the total production. During the 2022-23 RMS, the procurement of gram has increased to about 19.3% of the total output.
Procurement of gram has witnessed more than four-fold increase in 2022-23 RMS over the previous season. In case of masur (lentil), no procurement has been recorded in 2022-23 RMS as market prices have remained higher than the minimum support price (MSP).
The share of procurement as a percentage of the total production ranges from 3.3% in Uttar Pradesh to 28.7% in Telangana. CACP stated that the all-India average of procurement is recorded 19.3% in 2022-23 RMS, which is much lower than the existing procurement limit of 25% of production.
CACP state that pulses have been procured from 11.8 lakh farmers (as on June 30, 2022) during the 2022-23 RMS as compared to 4 lakh in the previous season. In the current marketing season, Maharashtra has the highest number of beneficiaries, followed by Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh as far as procurement of gram is concerned.
