New variety of wheat WH 1402 suitable for sandy soil, less water conditions

HAU, Hisar has developed this new wheat variety suitable for cultivation in northwestern plains of India

A new variety of wheat, WH 1402, which gives a high yield in two irrigations and moderate fertilizers, has been developed by the wheat and barley section of the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU), Hisar. Sharing this information, HAU Vice-Chancellor Professor B R Kamboj said the new variety has been identified for the northwestern plains of India, which includes Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir.

Prof Kamboj said the average yield of the variety can be 50 quintals per hectare and the maximum yield can be 68 quintals per hectare in just two irrigations.

The HAU VC said WH 1402 is resistant against yellow rust, brown rust and other diseases. The new variety gives 7.5% more yield than NIAW 3170, a good variety in low-water zones.

WH 1402 variety has been developed at the national level for sandy, less fertile and less water areas. “To get the maximum yield of this variety, it is recommended to use pure nitrogen 90 kg, phosphorus 60 kg, potash 40 kg and zinc sulphate 25 kg per hectare respectively,” VC said.

The HAU Dean of the College of Agriculture S K Pahuja said the appropriate time for sowing WH 1402 is from the last week of October to the first week of November and the quantity of seeds is 100 kg per hectare. “This variety requires two irrigations. The first irrigation is needed 20-25 days after sowing at the time of emergence of apical roots and the second irrigation is required at the time of emergence of earrings 80-85 days after sowing,” Pahuja said.

HAU principal agronomist Pawan Kumar, in-charge of the wheat and barley section, said WH 1402 variety is ready for harvest in 147 days. He said, “The height of this variety is 100 cm, due to which the risk of it falling is negligible. The grain of this variety is thick. It contains 11.3% protein, hectoliter weight (77.7 kg per hl), iron (37.6 parts per million) and zinc (37.8 ppm). Therefore, this variety is good in terms of nutritional value.”
