Wheat sowing usually begins from the fourth week of October in India

Wheat is the biggest rabi (winter-sown) crop of India.

As wheat sowing will begin from the fourth week of October, here are some of the latest varieties developed by the country’s premier agriculture research body, the Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR), Karnal. IIWBR is a part of the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi under the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

 

Karan Narendra (DBW222)

This variety has been recommended for sowing in the northwestern plain zones (NWPZ) of India, which includes Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan (except Kota and Udaipur divisions) and western Uttar Pradesh (except Jhansi division), parts of Jammu and Kashmir (Jammu and Kathua district) and parts of Himachal Pradesh (Una district and Paonta Valley of Sirmaur district) and Uttarakhand (Terai region).

Timely sown, irrigated conditions

Salient features

  • Seed yield: 61.3 quintals/hectare (24.52 quintals/acre)
  • Potential yield: 82.1 q/ha (32.84 q/acre)
  • Plant height: 103 cm (range 98-108 cm)
  • Maturity (in days): 143 (range 139-150)

Resistant to brown rust; moderately resistant to yellow rust; only 18.4% reduction in yield was recorded when sown late; chapati quality score (7.5/10); bread quality score 8.24 and biscuit spread factor 8.45.

 

Karan Vandana (DBW187) for NWPZ

For sowing in the northwestern plain zones (NWPZ) of India, which includes Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan (except Kota and Udaipur divisions) and western Uttar Pradesh (except Jhansi division), parts of Jammu and Kashmir (Jammu and Kathua district) and parts of Himachal Pradesh (Una district and Paonta valley of Sirmaur district) and Uttarakhand (Terai region).

Timely sown, irrigated conditions

Salient features

  • Seed yield: 61.8 q/ha (24.72 q/acre)
  • Potential yield: 96.6 q/ha (38.64 q/acre)
  • Plant height: 105 cm
  • Maturity (in days): 148 days (range 139-157)

High input responsive wheat variety for early sowing; resistant for stripe and leaf rust; highly resistant to wheat blast; moderate resistance to Karnal bunt and tolerance to loose smut; high 1,000-grain weight (44g), good chapati-making score (7.7); high bread loaf volume (648); high protein content (11.6 %).

 

Karan Vandana (DBW187) for NEPZ

For the northeastern plain zones (NEPZ), which include eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam and plains of northeastern states.

Timely sown, irrigated conditions

Salient features

  • Seed yield: 48.8 q/ha (19.52 q/acre)
  • Potential yield: 64.7 q/ha (25.88 q/acre)
  • Plant height: 100 cm
  • Maturity (in days): 120 (range 110-140)

Good biscuit spread factor (8.6cm); high iron (Fe) content (43.1 ppm); resistance to yellow and brown rust; resistant to foliar blights & wheat blast; moderate resistance to Karnal bunt and tolerance to loose smut.

 

Karan Shriya (DBW252)

This variety has been recommended for the northeastern plain zones (NEPZ), which include eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam and plains of northeastern states.

Timely sown, irrigated conditions

Salient features

  • Seed yield: 37 q/ha (13.86 q/acre)
  • Potential yield: 55.6 q/ha (22.24 q/acre)
  • Plant height: 98 cm (range 97-99 cm)
  • Maturity (in days): 127 (range 125-130)

Highly resistant to wheat blast disease (average 2.5%); it has a drought susceptibility index of 0.74.

 

DDW 47 Durum

This variety of durum wheat has been recommended for sowing in the central zone (CZ), which includes Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Rajasthan (Kota and Udaipur divisions) and Uttar Pradesh (Jhansi division).

Timely sown, irrigated conditions

Salient features

  • Seed yield: 37.3 q/ha (14.92 q/acre)
  • Potential yield: 74.1.6 q/ha (29.67 q/acre)
  • Plant height: 84 cm (range 83-85 cm)
  • Maturity (in days): 121 (range 118-121)

Higher yellow pigment content of 7.57 ppm; suitable for good quality pasta with high pasta acceptability score (7.9).
