Horticulture output on upward swing in India since 2012-13

At constant prices (2011-12), horticulture’s share in total value of output of agricultural crops was 34% in 2019-20

For the past one decade, the total production of horticulture crops has been more than the output of food grain crops in India. Since 2012-13, horticulture output has been higher than the production of food grains in the country.

As per the data prepared by the Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DES), Department of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmers Welfare (DACFW), Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, the fourth advance estimate put the total food grain output in India at 296.65 million metric tonnes while the third advance estimate pegged the horticulture production to 319.57 million metric tonnes.

In 2018-19, the total output of food grains and horticulture crops in India stood at 285.21 million metric tonnes and 311.05 million metric tonnes respectively. The total horticulture output in India in 2010-11 was 240.53 million metrics, which has been rising each year gradually.

As per the agriculture ministry, the horticulture crops include fruits & vegetables, spices & condiments, floriculture and plantation crops like cocoa, coconut, cashew nut etc.

Even the value of output of horticulture crops has seen an upward swing in India. According to the National Accounts Statistics-2021 of the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI), the value of the output of horticulture crops at the constant prices (2011-12) was Rs 4,66,000 crore in 2019-20. The value of the output of horticulture crops at constant prices (2011-12) was Rs 4,55,500 crore in 2018-19.

At the constant prices (2011-12), the share of horticulture in the total value of output of agricultural crops was 34% in 2019-20 and 34.89% in 2018-19. At the constant prices (2011-12), in 2012-13, the share of horticulture in the total value of output of agricultural crops was 30%.

The value of the output of horticulture crops at current prices (2011-12 series) was Rs 9,11,900 crore in 2019-20. Their share at current prices (2011-12 series) was 38.69% in the total value of output of agricultural crops in 2019-20.

Area under horticulture crops in 2019-20: 262.19 million hectares

Production of horticulture crops in 2019-20: 319.57 million metric tonnes
