14 new wheat varieties, 1 of barley identified for cultivation in India

The new varieties are suitable for sowing in various zones of the country

During the 62nd All India Wheat and Barley Workers’ Meet organized by the Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur (Rajasthan) from August 28 to 30, 2023, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR), Karnal, 14 new varieties of wheat and one of barley were identified for cultivation.

Apart from this, one variety of wheat was recommended for extension in cultivation area. Researchers working on wheat and barley crops from various parts of the country took part in the meeting.

NEW WHEAT VARIETIES

HD 3386: For irrigated timely sown conditions

WH 1402: For restricted irrigation timely sown conditions

For the northwestern plains zone (NWPZ) of India, which includes Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan (except Kota and Udaipur divisions) and western Uttar Pradesh (except Jhansi division), parts of Jammu and Kashmir (Jammu and Kathua district) and parts of Himachal Pradesh (Una district and Paonta Valley of Sirmaur district) and Uttarakhand (Terai region).

 

HD 3388: For irrigated timely sown conditions

For the northeastern plains zone (NEPZ), which includes eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam and plains of northeastern states.

 

NWS 2194 and GW 547: For irrigated timely sown conditions

DBW 359 and CG 1040: For restricted irrigation timely sown conditions

DBW377: For early sown high fertility conditions

For the central zone (CZ), which includes Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Rajasthan

 

MP 1378: For irrigated timely sown conditions

DBW 359, NIAW 4028, UAS 478, HI 8840 and HI 1665: For restricted irrigation timely sown conditions

For the peninsular zone (PZ), which includes Maharashtra, Karnataka and plains of Tamil Nadu.

 

 

For extension in cultivation area

DBW 327: For early sown high fertility conditions for extension of cultivation area in the central zone (CZ).
