SAS survey shows average monthly farm household income of India at Rs 10,218 in 2019

Meghalaya has the highest average monthly income of the farming households in India followed by Punjab and Haryana, as per the survey conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO) during the period between January 1 and December 31, 2019. The NSO, under the aegis of the Indian government’s Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI), conducted the survey ‘Situation Assessment of Agricultural Households and Land and Livestock Holdings of Households in Rural India (SAS), 2019’ as part of its 77th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS).

The findings of the SAS 2019 were released on September 10. The survey collected information on the receipts and expenditure relating to crop production, farming of animals and non-farm business, separately for the two halves of the agricultural year July 2018-June 2019.

Incomes from wages/salary and from leasing out of land were also recorded for the same period. Based on this information, average monthly income per agricultural household has been worked out for the agricultural year July 2018-June 2019 by adding up income from wages/salary, income from leasing out of land and net receipts from crop production, farming of animals and non-farm business. Net receipt is worked out by deducting total expenses from total receipts for each source of income.
