HAU develops new mustard variety RH 1975 for higher yield, oil content

Recommended for sowing in Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Jammu, north Rajasthan

Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU), Hisar has developed an improved variety of mustard RH 1975 that has higher yield and oil content. It is for timely sowing in irrigated areas and gives 12% more yield than HAU’s earlier popular variety RH 749.

HAU Vice Chancellor Professor B R Kamboj said during the 30th annual mustard and rye workshop organized in Jammu recently, the crop variety identification committee (VIC) under the chairmanship of T R Sharma, deputy director general (crops), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), has identified mustard variety RH 1975 for timely sowing in irrigated conditions.

The RH 1975 variety has an average yield of 11-12 quintals per acre. Its yield potential is about 14-15 quintals per acre. It has an oil content of about 39.5%.

The new mustard has been identified for sowing in the irrigated areas of Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Union Territory of Jammu and north Rajasthan. Prof Kamboj said seed of RH 1975 mustard variety will be made available to the farmers by next year.

The HAU Director of Research Jeetram Sharma said the new variety of mustard was developed by the team of scientists that includes Ram Avtar, Neeraj Kumar, Manjeet Singh, Ashok Kumar, Rakesh Poonia, Nisha Kumari, Vinod Goyal, Mahavir and Rajbir Singh. He said that last year this team had developed two varieties of mustard namely RH 1424 and RH 1706.
