Extreme cold reduces the milk output of cattle besides causing respiratory disease
The cold is intensifying in north India. In the coming days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a cold wave in isolated places in north and central India.
In such a situation, animal husbandry experts have advised protecting animals from cold waves and harsh winters. They said that during cold waves, animals’ temperatures decrease, and they start having trouble breathing.
They might also suffer from diseases like cough and pneumonia, which causes animals to stop eating and drinking and reduces milk production.
Protect animals from bitter cold this way:
- Experts advised taking animals out only during the daytime when it is sunny.
- Keep animals covered with blankets, etc.
- If any cold symptoms are seen in animals, immediately contact the nearest veterinarian.
- Give deworming medicines to all animals to protect them from cold waves.
- Give jaggery and mineral mixture to the cattle regularly.
- Use warm/lukewarm water to bathe animals.
- Keep the animal shelter dry.
- Keep the tin shed roofs of animal shelters covered with straw.
