US the largest consumer of pesticides in 2020, as per FAO data
According to data prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the use of pesticides in India increased from 44,958 tonnes in 2000 to 61,702 tonnes in 2020. In these 20 years, India’s use of pesticides increased by about 37.24%.
India’s share in the global pesticide consumption in 2020 was around 2.29 %. The use of pesticides in the world has increased by 30% during the 2000-2020 period. The total global pesticide usage in 2020 was 2.7 million tonnes.
In these 20 years, the greatest increase in the use of pesticides occurred between 2000 and 2012, and then it stabilized till 2017. Thereafter, there was a slight decrease in the use of pesticides.
In 2020, the United States of America was the world’s largest consumer, using 4.1 lakh tonnes of pesticides. It was followed by Brazil and China which used 3.8 lakh and 2.7 lakh tonnes of pesticides, respectively.
