Two high-yielding wheat varieties from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, have been identified for national cultivation. These varieties are PBW 906 for the Central Zone (CZ) and PBW 915 for the Northeastern Plains Zone (NEPZ).

These varieties were identified during the 64th All India Wheat and Barley Research Workers Meeting held in Gwalior in the fourth week of August 2025.

Both these varieties were identified in the meeting by the Variety Identification Committee (VIC) under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

These varieties underwent rigorous testing over three years, resulting in high yields and disease resistance. These varieties are suitable for cultivation in diverse agro-climatic zones.

PBW 906 is recommended for early sowing under high-input farming in the central region of India, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, parts of Rajasthan and Jhansi area of Uttar Pradesh.

The average yield of PBW 906 is 67.4 quintals per hectare (27.28 quintals per acre). This variety is resistant to brown rust and moderately resistant to black rust.

PBW 915 variety is suitable for timely irrigated areas in the NEPZ region, which includes Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, and adjoining areas.

After three years of testing, the variety gave an average yield of 52.5 quintals per hectare (21.25 quintals per acre). PBW 915 is resistant to two major wheat diseases: yellow and brown rust.
