Average yield of lentil in China during 2022 was 2,570 kg hectare
During the 2022-23 rabi crop year, India’s average yield of masur (lentil) was 65% lower than China, which had the world’s highest productivity. India’s average yield of lentil was 899 kilograms per hectare during 2022-23. According to figures compiled by the Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database (FAOSTAT), China’s average lentil yield was 2,570 kg per hectare.
Besides China, the countries with the highest average lentil yield are Australia (1,738 kg per hectare), Canada (1,341 kg per hectare), Bangladesh (1,320 kg per hectare) and Türkiye (1,738 kg per hectare).
The state-wise average yield of lentil in India during 2022-23, then Bihar had the highest yield which was 985 kg per hectare. This was also 61.7% less than China.
Bihar is followed by Madhya Pradesh (971 kg per hectare), West Bengal (960 kg per hectare) and Uttar Pradesh (950 kg per hectare).
India is the largest producer of pulses in the world. However, its production is not enough to meet the country’s demand. According to the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) data, India imported 16.8 lakh tonnes of lentils in 2023-24.
