Main breeds of Japanese quail raised for meat, eggs in India

CARI has developed 6 breeds that are available for commercial poultry

After hen and duck farming, Japanese quail farming is also growing as a business in India. It requires less space and lower expenses.

Anyone interested in starting Japanese quail farming and seeking information, guidance, and training can contact the Central Avian Research Institute (CARI) of the Indian government, located at Izatnagar, Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh).

The breeds of quail developed by CARI mainly include CARI Uttam, CARI Pearl, CARI Ujjwal, CARI Sweta, CARI Brown, and CARI Sunehri. These are based on Japanese quail and are popular for both egg and meat production.

CARI Uttam

  • Raised for both meat and eggs
  • Weight reaches up to 250 g in 5 weeks
  • Average egg weight: 12–13 g
  • Annual egg production: up to 260 eggs per female
  • Egg hatching capacity: 70–75%

CARI Pearl

  • Raised mainly for eggs
  • Weight reaches up to 140 g in 5 weeks
  • Average egg weight: 9 g
  • Annual egg production: up to 305 eggs per female
  • Egg hatching capacity: 70–80%

CARI Ujjwal

  • Raised mainly for eggs
  • Weight reaches up to 175 g in 5 weeks
  • Average egg weight: 11 g
  • Annual egg production: up to 220 eggs per female
  • Egg hatching capacity: 70%

CARI Sweta

  • Pure white breed
  • Weight reaches 160–170 g in 5 weeks
  • Average egg weight: 10–11 g
  • Annual egg production: up to 205 eggs per female
  • Egg hatching capacity: 60–65%

CARI Brown

  • Brown breed
  • Weight reaches 180–185 g in 5 weeks
  • Average egg weight: 11 g
  • Annual egg production: up to 210 eggs per female
  • Egg hatching capacity: 60–70%

CARI Sunehri

  • Half brown and half white breed
  • Weight reaches up to 180 g in 5 weeks
  • Average egg weight: 11 g
  • Annual egg production: up to 200 eggs per female
