These varieties are suitable for eating, chip-processing
The Indian Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has approved four new varieties of potato for cultivation and seed production in the country which are suitable for eating and processing to make chips and other products. These varieties have been developed by the Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Shimla. These new varieties are Kufri Ratan, Kufri Tejas, Kufri Chipbharat-1, and Kufri Chipbharat-2.
Kufri Ratan is a red-skinned potato variety which is used for consumption. This variety matures in 90 days for harvest. It has an average yield of 370-390 quintals per hectare (about 150-160 quintals per acre). It is recommended for cultivation in the plains of north India and plateau regions. It has a long shelf life.
Kufri Tejas is a heat-tolerant variety of table potato. It also matures in 90 days. Its average yield is 370-400 quintals per hectare (about 150-160 quintals per acre). t is recommended for cultivation in Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Kufri Chipbharat-1 is a variety suitable for making chips. This variety matures in 100 days. Its average yield is 350-380 quintals per hectare (about 140–150 quintals per acre). It has high dry matter (21%), low reducing sugars, and produces chips of acceptable colour. Kufri Chipbharat-1 has been recommended for cultivation in Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.
Kufri Chipbharat-2 is also an early-maturing variety for making chips. his variety matures in 90 days. Its average yield is 350-370 quintals hectare (about 140-150 quintals per acre). It can be stored for a longer period. This variety is recommended for cultivation in Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.
